Introductory Blog Post: Empowered, Creative, Confident

In the late part of Autumn, when the seasons began to shift and comfort food started wafting its way through hearth and home, I had an idea: why not start a blog?

Honestly, it’d been something I’d been mulling over for quite some time. I love writing, I love music, and over the course of this past year, I’ve come to realize that I love sharing written reflections on what the music-learning experience is like.

Maybe this idea came through after switching up the way I write blurbs for Borderland Music Studio’s monthly newsletter. (Which, if you haven’t subscribed to, you can get on our mailing list by emailing us HERE).

Or maybe it came from a really amazing November studio class discussion with my adult piano students.

Or perhaps it was a little of all the above. The resulting harvest of small, subtle seedlings that had been gently nourished throughout the year.

And so, here we are. At the start of a new adventure. I still haven’t figured out what to title the blog as a whole, but I’m giving myself the space and grace to figure that out as I go. I’m pretty sure Beethoven and his publishers took time naming pieces every now and then, too.

What I’m definitely sure of, though, is my goal for this blog. My goal is to share musically-minded meditations that can help guide pianists into being empowered, creative, and confident musicians.

Everything from advice on how to practice smarter not harder, preparing for a lesson, somatically regulating our nervous systems before a performance - even yoga stretches that can help bring improved awareness to our bodies (which is, after all, our first instrument. More on that later!)

There’s definitely going to be music history sprinkled in from time to time, too. Because learning about the songwriters and composers who’ve shaped our piano libraries is just as important as figuring out how to play eighth notes against triplets, or figuring out how to quickly find Middle C.

(To gain confidence in playing rhythms and smoothing your technique, fill out our inquiry form HERE. Let’s kickstart your piano learning journey and book a FREE 30-minute Discovery Call!)

At the end of the day, after the metronome is put away and the book of Chopin Preludes is neatly closed on the piano’s music stand, if you’re reading this, this blog is for you.

Whether you’re a piano student, a parent of a piano student, a fellow piano teacher, or any other musician, artist, or lifelong learner: welcome. I’m so glad you’re here!

Let’s get empowered, tap into our creativity, and grow into confident pianists together!
